Claude is starting to watermark its generated text, which will help others identify that it was made with AI.

But even if Anthropic didn't make this decision, AI writing was never going to work...

No matter how good the model gets. No matter how much money the AI labs spend to make it sound human.

Here's why I think it won't work:

Writing is just a medium. The actual outcome is information transfer or entertainment. Agreed?

Think about it. Anything you write on X (could be about your company, yourself, whatever). The end goal is either to entertain someone or inform someone. Writing and words are just a medium to reach that outcome.

Now when you use AI, you know yourself that you are not being true to yourself. It's another system speaking. Choosing what words to use. Even what to say, what ideas to say. It's not 100% authentic. It's not you. That's true, right? It is NOT truly you. It cannot be.

Because you wouldn't have said the same thing. What are the odds that you would have said the same thing in the same order? Zero!

So now that we've established that AI writing is not truly you, that's step one. Step two is the audience realizing that you have used AI. And once the reader finds out that this wasn't posted by Brian authentically, the desire to read it doesn't go down by 20%. It goes down by 100%. Because the reader will feel: "oh this is written by AI. It's slop. It's garbage. It's not even what Brian truly thinks."

And that loss in trust lasts. Because your face and brand get associated with using AI to communicate your ideas.

Note that views are not the same as trust. You can farm views with AI and still train people that your name means mass produced text.

It's kind of like luxury goods. Brands like Burberry would rather destroy inventory or eat the cost than flood the market with discounts.

The very fact that there is more supply doesn't reduce demand by 20%. It reduces demand by 100% for their bags. Nobody wants something that is easily replicable or mass produced. And that is what AI slop is. Mass produced. Nobody has really put in the time to create that piece of content beautifully and painstakingly. It's not handcrafted like a Hermes Birkin. Everyone knows a Birkin is made by a single artisan from start to finish. That time and craft IS the reason people want it.

Now if Brian took 5 minutes to draft that AI slop thread, people know it's not even worth 10 minutes of their time to read it. But if people can tell Brian took an hour to write that thread, they will spare 10 minutes for his real thoughts. And probably millions of people will spend those 10 minutes.

I hope this makes sense.

My favorite way to use AI when it comes to writing is research and fact checking. Just use it to make sure you know what you're talking about and not making a stupid mistake with a specific fact or something. But stay away from it when it comes to generating ideas. And please for god's sake stay away when it comes to writing. It's very easy to tell.

It's been a good year for companies that benefit from more content. X, Substack, platforms, Instagram. AI means content becomes easier to produce. But that doesn't mean it's good content. If you're reading this, please just run in the other direction when it comes to using AI for writing.

Basically: assume that if you're using AI, the other person knows you are using AI. Are you fine with that? If you're posting on Twitter... then no. You're probably not fine with your followers knowing you have used AI. If you're vibecoding a presentation for a colleague at work... You might be fine with them knowing it was created with AI. But if instead of a colleague it's your boss, you might not be fine with that now. Differs by situation! But just assume that if you're using AI, the person on the other end knows it.

The actual reason you shouldn’t use AI writing in your company blogs, X posts etc is because once the reader realizes it’s written by an AI (not that difficult to do), the desire to read that piece of content doesn’t go down by 20%. It goes down by 100%. Nobody will want to read it.

And even your future stuff.

And no matter how good you think your AI slop is, it’s not good enough to get past most people.

So just drop it immediately. Just write like you would without AI. Have an editor to fix mistakes. That’s pretty much it. Use AI to vibecode it into a beautiful looking UI maybe. But don’t use AI to write it.

Tomorrow will be my last day at Google after 27 years, and watching it grow from 25 people to 190,000+ has been an amazing journey. Below is a note I shared with many people internally at Google today. An excerpt is:

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you and to help build some of the most widely used and impactful products of all time.  As a kid, I dreamed of helping build software that would be used by many people, and Google now has thirteen products used by more than a billion people (amazing!).  Our work has had a tremendous impact in the world, and I have been lucky enough to collaborate and form friendships with many colleagues that I deeply admire, respect, and enjoy.  It still brings me joy every time I see people out in the world using our products to find information, handle email, translate documents, watch videos, learn new things, navigate and understand the physical world, browse the web, use their phone, run large-scale computations on our infrastructure, ride in an autonomous vehicle, or perform complex tasks with the help of our AI systems.  I hope you all share this sense of joy, because it is a shared accomplishment! Thank you to all of my colleagues at Google over many years!

Yes, they are very behind on AI. Apple has about $130B in cash. If they wanted to make a move on AI, they really could… But they don’t want to. I don’t exactly know why. But they don’t want to.

It could be because they’re so large that the cost of screwing it up could be a lot. Not sure. But anyway, time and time again we have seen the companies that are first to a technology are not necessarily the ones that win that race. Google was not the first search engine, was it?

I’m confident Apple is going to win. Even in AI. Eventually. Every company (tech or non-tech) believes that AI is super valuable and changes the game. But there’s a lot of bullshit too. There’s a lot of unproductive tokenmaxxing that doesn’t move the needle and produces slop work. Apple is just waiting for others to figure out where the value is and then they’ll focus on that. They have the best distribution channel in the world. They have over 1.5B active iPhones right now. That’s BILLION.

The thing is that Apple has already tried with Siri and seems like they failed. To convince smart people to join and work at Apple might be tough. But hopefully being the most valuable company in the world will help with that.

It’s so cool to see customers use your product.

With Nia (Narrative Intelligence Agent), we’re seeing customers use it for all sorts of things that we did not expect when starting out. But some of those use cases are now the ones making it into the core product.

You just cannot predict it because you cannot predict all future scenarios in your head.

You really just have to get it in the hands of customers and see them use it, or have them tell you what they find value in and what they don’t.

Such a beautiful process.

Also another rule: don’t take feedback from people that don’t pay for your product. Only take feedback from customers. Paying customers will be way more upfront and serious about the value you bring vs friends using your product for free who will always say nice things.

The fact that YC and Jensen can fill an arena with 6,000 ambitious founders is getting me so freaking pumped.

I truly feel like it's the best time to build a company today. AI is levelling the playing ground. You can build faster than ever. You can also build the wrong stuff faster than ever. So clarity and quality of decision making becomes extremely important.

Talking to your customers has no replacement. Making something people want has no replacement. Just because AI makes building software easier doesn't mean it makes building a business easier.

In anything, there is probably more competition than ever thanks to AI and the internet.

Anyway, I love that Jensen did that interview. Excited for more entrepreneurs to keep building. It's best for customers and it truly creates magic for the world. We need more entrepreneurs!

The amount of slop there is in my message requests on X DMs is wild. But it also makes it incredibly easy to determine who to reply to. It’s a natural filter for me.

It's becoming a problem on X because the signal to noise ratio is worsening but honestly, even if I feel something is slop but well written, I just end up scrolling past it because of the implication that not much time or intentionality went behind it.

I’m not looking for perfectly drafted messages. I’m looking for intentionality and effort behind the input.

AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country.

Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.

The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models.

Q2 was an amazing quarter, with our AI investments redefining what’s possible across every part of our business.

Alphabet revenue grew 24% YoY and Google Cloud accelerated to 82% growth. We saw exciting momentum across the board from Search to YouTube to the Gemini app (which reached 950M monthly active users). Our model APIs are processing 22B tokens/min (up from 16B+ last quarter) driven by our workhorse Flash models. We’re also seeing great adoption of Gemini Enterprise, used by 90% of the Fortune 100, as well as strong demand for our security solutions.

Nia (Narrative Intelligence Agent) is coming together very nicely.

At this point, it's scouring tens of thousands of posts a day and delivering only 3-4 on X that are actually worth our customers engaging with.

It filters out 99.9% of the BS you have to read when you're on the X timeline.

And it doesn't just match on your company name. It also catches relevant industry conversations around your product, company, or leadership. Then it surfaces what's worth engaging with and advises whether to reply, repost, or quote post.

The magic is in the filtration. There will be at least tens of posts daily that SEEM like they're worth engaging with. But they won't pass Nia's filters. Engagement isn't strong enough, or not enough influential profiles follow the original author or there might be several other reasons. The algorithm is pretty complex at this point. But what's true is simple: if Nia surfaces a post, it's likely worth engaging with. And it'll guide you on what to do.

Nia has already helped a few replies and posts hit a couple million impressions (pretty huge, when brands normally get thousands of views). I'm particularly excited to get Nia into more corporate social and exec social hands. Not everyone has the time to use X themselves. Nor do they want to. But when it comes to promoting, they still want to talk about their launch on X. That's not how it works.

X rewards you for being a PART of the conversation. Replying, quote posting, adding thoughts, extending the thread. You cannot just show up, launch your product, and get millions of views unless you spend a bomb on ads. And then you're not growing the brand organically anyway.

Everyone's building AI agents for coding and email.

Meanwhile there's a machine shop running on a website from 2011 and a PDF catalog. Doing millions in revenue. Try buying a crane, a ship, or a custom machine part online today. You can't. Nobody's building for that.

Gushwork is building a way for buyers and sellers of the physical economy, heavy machinery, industrial equipment, things that have never had an "add to cart" button, to find each other and do business. Agentic commerce for the stuff the internet forgot.

Making the physical economy transactable is a bigger market than another coding agent. This is what they’re building toward.

That gap is wild to me. Half the country is using this stuff. Almost nobody is paying.

I think people already adopted AI. Paying for it is what's still early. And those two are getting mixed up a lot.

1993 internet was hard to get onto. But 2026 AI is free on every phone. You open ChatGPT and start talking. It's just so much easier.

My bet is that AI becomes like Google Search. The basics stay free for everyone, and get cheaper to run over time. You pay when you need the business tools (Workspace, Team etc). That's already how Claude and ChatGPT work.
