Twitter has come far in the last few years.

I joined 6 years ago and quickly found that this was the place for me. Thoughtful conversations about business and technology. Absolutely loved it.

But ever since it became X, it’s taken a step up.

I feel like there are more people at X even talking about what they’re building. It feels like they’re PART of the community, not just building for it.

I’m incredibly bullish on enterprises, startups and individuals spending time on X and it being a massive ROI on their time for their business.

Smile. Make jokes.
Write X articles.
Decide what your brand actually stands for.
Think twice about who you engage with. Brand replies are permanent. Be extremely selective.
Be consistent, not loud.
Be early on replies. If a post has high engagement velocity, the first few hours matter a ton. Engage early and your reply gets seen by the maximum number of people.
Show the humans behind the brand. Pictures. Video. Real people. Helps a ton with hiring actually. Oh and while we're on this: use X's hiring tools. I don't see many brands using them.
Post original takes. Native to X. Not press releases or links to blog posts. Just post directly on X.

And it's always a repackaging done by a meme account or a creator from something they must have seen on X. It's the same with LinkedIn, but there are no meme accounts.

If you want to shape what the world decides to believe, you need to be on X. And you need to FLOURISH on X.

There are consistency issues. You can't get exactly what you want each time. And if you finally get something good, editing it to perfection is a big problem because it completely screws it up.

Whereas look at Claude Design. You can easily generate and edit beautiful PDFs, forms, slides, websites, documents etc. Just like Canva.

The Claude Design moment for image gen is yet to happen.

Why X is the most valuable platform in the world:

1. The AI conversation is happening here. And it’s not even close. AI is the biggest technological revolution of our time. All the announcements, everything. Even Zuckerberg, who has his own platform, breaks his biggest news on X. Tells you everything you need to know about how valuable this platform is.

2. It’s real time. Marc Andreessen said something I really liked. He either reads stuff that happened in real time or stuff that has lasted the test of time (decades and years). Nothing in between. X is the real time. You know what is happening the moment it launches, breaks a story, anything. If you want to be ahead of the curve, you quite literally have to live on X.

3. You get direct access to people you could never reach otherwise. On most other platforms, assistants are screening DMs. It’s different on X.

I’ve DMd a few people worth tens of billions of dollars (some of the richest people in the world) and received a response (from them.. because it’s obvious that it’s not an assistant) within 30 minutes.

4. The cost of entry is zero. You don’t need a degree or permission to start tweeting. All you need is curiosity and ambition. Look at anonymous accounts. Or pseudonymous accounts. Nobody knows who’s behind them. Nobody knows their credentials. But they’ve built their credibility by tweeting and open-sourcing their thoughts. And that trust goes further than any degree could.

Honestly, Grok and Cursor have both gotten so much better in the last year.

I remember when I first tried them out, I thought they had no chance of competing (Grok especially), but the teams have done a phenomenal job at keeping up and now leading from the front.

Grok is my default for quick searches, and the engine I trust most when it comes to fact checking and a lot of other things. Not for knowledge work yet though! Congrats to the team.

Claude is starting to watermark its generated text, which will help others identify that it was made with AI.

But even if Anthropic didn't make this decision, AI writing was never going to work...

No matter how good the model gets. No matter how much money the AI labs spend to make it sound human.

Here's why I think it won't work:

Writing is just a medium. The actual outcome is information transfer or entertainment. Agreed?

Think about it. Anything you write on X (could be about your company, yourself, whatever). The end goal is either to entertain someone or inform someone. Writing and words are just a medium to reach that outcome.

Now when you use AI, you know yourself that you are not being true to yourself. It's another system speaking. Choosing what words to use. Even what to say, what ideas to say. It's not 100% authentic. It's not you. That's true, right? It is NOT truly you. It cannot be.

Because you wouldn't have said the same thing. What are the odds that you would have said the same thing in the same order? Zero!

So now that we've established that AI writing is not truly you, that's step one. Step two is the audience realizing that you have used AI. And once the reader finds out that this wasn't posted by Brian authentically, the desire to read it doesn't go down by 20%. It goes down by 100%. Because the reader will feel: "oh this is written by AI. It's slop. It's garbage. It's not even what Brian truly thinks."

And that loss in trust lasts. Because your face and brand get associated with using AI to communicate your ideas.

Note that views are not the same as trust. You can farm views with AI and still train people that your name means mass produced text.

It's kind of like luxury goods. Brands like Burberry would rather destroy inventory or eat the cost than flood the market with discounts.

The very fact that there is more supply doesn't reduce demand by 20%. It reduces demand by 100% for their bags. Nobody wants something that is easily replicable or mass produced. And that is what AI slop is. Mass produced. Nobody has really put in the time to create that piece of content beautifully and painstakingly. It's not handcrafted like a Hermes Birkin. Everyone knows a Birkin is made by a single artisan from start to finish. That time and craft IS the reason people want it.

Now if Brian took 5 minutes to draft that AI slop thread, people know it's not even worth 10 minutes of their time to read it. But if people can tell Brian took an hour to write that thread, they will spare 10 minutes for his real thoughts. And probably millions of people will spend those 10 minutes.

I hope this makes sense.

My favorite way to use AI when it comes to writing is research and fact checking. Just use it to make sure you know what you're talking about and not making a stupid mistake with a specific fact or something. But stay away from it when it comes to generating ideas. And please for god's sake stay away when it comes to writing. It's very easy to tell.

It's been a good year for companies that benefit from more content. X, Substack, platforms, Instagram. AI means content becomes easier to produce. But that doesn't mean it's good content. If you're reading this, please just run in the other direction when it comes to using AI for writing.

Basically: assume that if you're using AI, the other person knows you are using AI. Are you fine with that? If you're posting on Twitter... then no. You're probably not fine with your followers knowing you have used AI. If you're vibecoding a presentation for a colleague at work... You might be fine with them knowing it was created with AI. But if instead of a colleague it's your boss, you might not be fine with that now. Differs by situation! But just assume that if you're using AI, the person on the other end knows it.

This is by far the greatest rivalry in all of tech, and the ones who are winning are the end consumers.

The actual reason you shouldn’t use AI writing in your company blogs, X posts etc is because once the reader realizes it’s written by an AI (not that difficult to do), the desire to read that piece of content doesn’t go down by 20%. It goes down by 100%. Nobody will want to read it.

And even your future stuff.

And no matter how good you think your AI slop is, it’s not good enough to get past most people.

So just drop it immediately. Just write like you would without AI. Have an editor to fix mistakes. That’s pretty much it. Use AI to vibecode it into a beautiful looking UI maybe. But don’t use AI to write it.
