As @satyanadella says, we're making great progress on shipping MAI models that are higher quality, faster and cheaper across MSFT.

In PowerPoint, our image model cut costs 84% compared with GPT-Image-2. 

In OneDrive, it lifted save rates 26% and cut latency by ~25%. It's also the default model in Bing delivering great quality and performance.  

In Dragon Copilot, our transcription model now covers 58 languages and halves the error rate on multilingual clinical transcription.

And of course the flights we have in motion on GitHub and Excel will no doubt be huge too!

After reviewing 1.7m conversations across 109 countries, it’s clear that Copilot is an invaluable resource particularly for people with low confidence in their health systems.

We've always known that technology is a great equalizer, driving broader access to better quality services. This is further evidence that AI is giving underserved people around the world access to invaluable support when they need it most.

Shaping our culture at Microsoft AI is one of the most important responsibilities I have. Keeping our team lean and talent dense is critical to our success. It's something I've thought very carefully about over the years.

I thought I'd share a few of the principles we ask everyone in the team to sign up to.

Everything below flows from one conviction: a disciplined, evidence-based, careful methodology compounds faster than heroic and chaotic improvisation. We don't always get it right but this is what we strive for:

- Scientific rigor above all else. We set hypotheses, rigorously ablate, and make data-driven decisions.

- Constantly think simple. Simple methods scale best. No recipe changes unless deeply justified.

- Know your data. Data is our lifeblood. No data black boxes. Every person is responsible for every token they add to the model.

- Know your evals. No narratives without numbers. Production evals and trust internal metrics, over academic benchmarks.

- Don't celebrate results prematurely. Maintain healthy skepticism. Check for reward hacking. Never cherry pick results.

- Always document everything. Positive and negative results are equally critical. Label every plot and axes. Summarize hypotheses and conclusions. Don't use jargon.

- Be precise and use neutral language. Describe situations accurately without unnecessary emotional charge.

- Retrospectives drive everything. The culture and process flywheel is critical to our hill climbing machine. We constantly run Retros to iterate and improve.

- We’re an IC-first team. Management is a service, not the goal. We’re here to empower, unblock and accelerate the exceptional work of our world class ICs.

- User focus. We build our models for end users. Developing user empathy begins with us. We always strive to use our own models first so we can hill climb for our users.

- Take ownership for execution. Report issues, provide logs for debugging. First try to fix things yourself. And see it right through to completion.

The quality of our thinking determines the quality of our models.

Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.5 ranks #2 in Text to Image and #3 in Image Editing in the Artificial Analysis Image Arena, behind only OpenAI's image models

The latest addition to the MAI Image family is capable of handling both text to image generation and image editing, up to a maximum output resolution of roughly 1MP at flexible aspect ratios with a 32K token context.

MAI-Image-2.5 is one of the strongest image models we have tested, ranking #2 in Text to Image behind only OpenAI's GPT Image 2. Its Image Editing capabilities rank at #3 on our leaderboard, ranking just behind OpenAI’s image models, with performance comparable to Google’s Nano Banana 2.

MAI-Image-2.5-Flash, the faster, lower-cost variant, lands at #8 in Text to Image and #6 in Image Editing.

It's exceptionally strong in reasoning and SWE benchmarks. I’m super proud that it’s at 53% on SWE-Bench Pro, placing it right alongside Opus 4.6 on one of the toughest coding benchmarks. We have a lot more work to do as we get it into production and climb on more real world use cases.

We also launched six other world class models. Here's the line up:  microsoft.ai

- MAI-Transcribe-1.5 is the best transcription model in the world, with SOTA accuracy across 43 languages, beating out Gemini and OpenAI’s flagship transcription models. It offers the best accuracy, 5x faster than rival models. It's now in Microsoft Foundry, where it’s the fastest, most efficient and most cost‑effective transcription model of any hyper-scaler.

- MAI‑Voice‑2 our latest speech generation model, with native‑sounding delivery and fine‑grained emotional control, available in 15 languages with lots more coming soon. And MAI-Voice‑2‑Flash provides the best value and speed for ultra latency‑sensitive Voice Agents.

- MAI-Code-1-Flash is our new inference efficient coding model, especially tuned for VS Code and GitHub Copilot CLI. It's a brilliant, fast model at just 5B actives, and delivers 51% on SWE-Bench Pro. Super excited to get it into prod and climb on more real-world tasks.

- MAI-Image-2.5 and Flash are two super strong models that deliver a step change in quality and surpass Nano Banana 2 on the image editing leaderboard. MAI-Image-2.5 delivers super strong performance on H100s, enabling deployment on existing infrastructure, with flexibility to scale across GB200/GB300 systems.

It’s time to move from renting intelligence to truly controlling your AI. Microsoft Frontier Tuning lets you take our models and make them uniquely your own, turning them from capable generalists to completely custom partners.

It starts with reinforcement learning environments (RLEs) that allow our models to learn directly from your workflows. Think of them as training gyms for AI. Here the agent learns your very specific processes, your standards, your way of working. It goes from off-the-shelf to hyper-adapted to exactly what you and your teams need. Those adaptations drive efficiency and performance, and your unique models can keep continually learning in your RLEs. This changes the nature of AI – and it changes the impact.

Super excited to announce seven new world-class MAI models today. They represent what we consider a new era in AI designed to keep you in control and on the frontier.
First is our text foundation model, MAI-Thinking-1, exceptionally strong on reasoning and SWE tasks. 
- It’s a 35B active parameter MoE with a 256K context window. Independent human raters on Surge prefer it for overall quality in blind side-by-sides versus Sonnet 4.6, and it’s achieved 97% on AIME 2025, the key measure of its general-purpose reasoning abilities. 
- It's at 53% on SWE Bench Pro, placing it right alongside Opus 4.6 on one of the toughest coding benchmarks. 
- And since we co-designed our models with our own silicon, MAI-Thinking-1 is optimized on our MAIA 200 chip. Benchmarking head-to-head against the GB200, we see 30% better performance per dollar as well as a 1.4x performance-per-watt gain when running our MAI models on the MAIA 200 end-to-end. 
 
Next is MAI-Image-2.5 and its Flash variant. Two super strong models now at #2 on the leaderboards, surpassing the score of Nano Banana 2 on image editing. 
 
Last for now is MAI-Code-1-Flash, our new inference efficient coding model, especially tuned for VS Code and GitHub Copilot CLI. 
- Code-1-Flash achieves 51% on SWE Bench Pro, despite having just 5B parameters, putting it closer to Haiku in size but cheaper in cost. 
 
All of this is the foundation for Microsoft Frontier Tuning. It lets you customize our models to create custom, company-specific agents that only you control. You can make our model, your model. Your data. Your agents. Your moat. 
 
Early adopters are already seeing a difference. When we tuned our models for McKinsey’s tasks, MAI delivered the highest win rate, outperforming GPT-5.5 on quality, while being 10x lower on cost. 
 
Also really excited to be collaborating with the amazing team at Mayo Clinic to jointly train a new frontier AI model for healthcare.

Little thought experiment to put AI chip improvements in perspective:
 
Imagine that every person on Earth uses a calculator to perform one calculation per second. Everyone works 24 hours a day without rest. Every second, we all hit equals on the calculator for a long digit multiplication.
 
It would take all of us together hitting equals non-stop about 22 days to complete what a single GB300 chip does in just one second.

So we can't just think of personalization as care for the user but helping them support and care for their loved ones too. Someone asking about an infant’s or an elderly relative’s symptoms may need different information or follow-up recommendations than someone asking about their own.

We're not hitting an AI ceiling. Here's why the AI scaling skeptics are wrong.

Exponentials help us understand everything that's going on in AI. For thousands of years, we lived in a linear world. Two apple trees produced about twice as many as one did. Walking half as far took half as long. AI broke that mold - and our imaginations haven't yet evolved to catch up.

Since I began work on AI in 2010, the amount of training data that goes into frontier AI models has grown by one trillion times. It's taken us from models that can sometimes identify cars in photos to models that can act autonomously for up to 12 hours at a time, using different apps, taking actions.

It's an exponential explosion. Now consider that we're looking at something like another 1000x in effective compute by the end of 2028.
 
Moore's Law, exponential itself, can't even keep up. Training a language model that took 167 minutes on 8 GPUs in 2020 now completes in under 4 minutes on equivalent modern hardware. That's a 50x improvement, when Moore's would predict only 5x.

Skeptics who keep predicting these "walls" AI will hit often point to a slowing of Moore's law, when in fact, Moore's law seems to be underestimating what's possible. Sometimes they point to energy constraints. Meanwhile, solar costs have fallen nearly 100x over fifty years; battery prices have dropped 97% over three decades. There is a pathway to clean scaling coming into view.
 
Impressive stats aside, what does this mean for us?
 
It means we're standing at the precipice of cognitive abundance. Previously impossible benefits in sight if not already within reach, from new healthcare cures to scientific breakthroughs. That's the world our superintelligence lab is planning for and proactively building.
 
I hope all of us start reimagining what might be possible, and how fast. What do we want that world to look like? It'll be here sooner than we think.
