I was asked, how do I manage stress from economic shocks, geopolitical shocks, and all the things that are going on?

While my typical approaches like "pain plus reflection equals progress" and meditation are highly effective, I’ll pass along another principle that I think is the best advice: The Serenity Prayer.

I view this almost like a game. These macro things are happening, but there are also a lot of joyous things and choices that exist with us. It’s really up to me to navigate them.

What can I control that's really important to me? What can't I control? I can't live forever, so I’m not going to get stressed out about that. But on the other hand, I can control certain things. Having that equanimity allows me to approach life in a way where I don't get hijacked.

It is logical, real, and practical. Look around you. You’ve got wonderful things and things you aspire to. Don't get so attached. If you navigate your life well, you're going to be fine.

Imagine that virtually everything important going on in your company can be captured as data, and that you can build algorithms to instruct the computer, as you would instruct a person, to analyze that data and use it in the way you agreed it should be used. In that way, you and the computer on your behalf could look at each person and all the people together and provide tailored guidance, just like your GPS provides you guidance by knowing all the traffic patterns and routes. You don't have to make it mandatory to follow that guidance, though you can. Generally speaking, the system operates like a coach. And the coach can learn about its team: Data is collected about what people do so that if they make more insightful moves or less insightful moves, learning will occur and be used to create improvements. Because the thinking behind the algorithms is available to everyone, anyone can assess the quality of the logic and its fairness, and have a hand in shaping it. #principleoftheday

That is why I wrote Principles in 2017.

Over my life and career, every time I encountered a situation and thought about how to make a decision, I took the time to write down the criteria I would use. They became recipes—written principles that others could look at, challenge, and use to find clarity. Eventually, we even put many of these into algorithms so computers could make decisions with us.

Writing them down changed everything for me. Now, I hope anyone who reads them can take these recipes and decide for themselves what works for them.

In order to be successful, you have to do five things. There’s a sequence to it.

1. Have (audacious) goals.
2. Identify and don't tolerate problems.
3. Diagnose the problems to get at their root causes.
4. Design a path to fix those things.
5. Push through to results.

This is what I call looping. Go for your goals, identify your problems, get to the root cause, design a path, and push through. Life is basically just doing that over and over again. If you do that, you'll make the advances.

If you have success, you did it right, so there is probably nothing to learn. But if you have failure, there is something to learn.

You have to make the most of your failures. Over time, I developed an instinctual reaction to failure. My instinct now is to view failure as a puzzle that will give me gems if I can solve it.

The puzzle is simply this: What would I do differently in the future so as not to have that result?

When you solve that puzzle, you write the lesson down. That is where principles come from.

I often observe people making decisions if their odds of being right are greater than 50 percent. What they fail to see is how much better off they'd be if they raised their chances even more (you can almost always improve your odds of being right by doing things that will give you more information). The expected value gain from raising the probability of being right from 51 percent to 85 percent (i.e., by 34 percentage points) is seventeen times more than raising the odds of being right from 49 percent (which is probably wrong) to 51 percent (which is only a little more likely to be right). Think of the probability as a measure of how often you're likely to be wrong. Raising the probability of being right by 34 percentage points means that a third of your bets will switch from losses to wins. That's why it pays to stress-test your thinking, even when you're pretty sure you're right.

People came from all over the world because it was a refuge and a land of opportunity. But it requires us to ask: How does the rule of law balance with compromise to reach an agreement for the greater good?

I love everything about the 4th of July, and the 250th anniversary is especially great for me because I am joining with family and friends for a reading of the Declaration of Independence, a BBQ, and fireworks.

As I reflect on what has happened over the 250 years that followed July 4th, 1776, it seems like an impossible dream come true. Think about it. Imagine that at the outset on July 4th, 1776, you were asked what odds for success a country would have if it would be mostly made up of poor immigrants coming from all different countries with very different cultures and religions and it would be governed by a political system in which the leaders reported to these people who themselves had to vote, compromise, and submit to life-changing decisions that many disagreed with. Would you bet that it would do exceptionally well and improve for 250 years? I would have thought that virtually impossible, yet America has been exceptional for 250 years.

I also see that it was shockingly terrific and lucky for me to have lived through the best part of those 250 years because I was born four years after the 1945 post-World War II beginning of the new American world order, which gave me the best time in history in the best place in the world.

These reflections give me a deep appreciation for the principles and practices—the secret sauce—that created and sustained this remarkable American story, a fear that we are losing sight of them, and a sense of responsibility to contribute to sustaining them.

Unfortunately, numerous tests by psychologists show that the majority of people follow the lower-level path most of the time, which leads to inferior decisions without their realizing it. As Carl Jung put it, "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." It's even more important that decision making be evidence-based and logical when groups of people are working together. If it's not, the process will inevitably be dominated by the most powerful rather than the most insightful participants, which is not only unfair but suboptimal. Successful organizations have cultures in which evidence-based decision making is the norm rather than the exception.

People came from all over to work and live well together, becoming prosperous because you could have a good balance of freedom, rule of law, and civility. People were willing to compromise and work together because they recognized that, while imperfect, the greater system was ultimately fair.

Our founding fathers had an aspirational dream of what could be possible, and that dream became a reality. It is one hell of an accomplishment, and we must not lose sight of the principles behind that success.

People bring their unique personalities and nationalities, and everyone just gets along with so much respect. Whether it’s the Scots bringing their spirit and bagpipes to the games, or the Japanese fans cleaning up the stadium after a match, it’s a beautiful reflection of what the United Nations—and all countries—should be.

Both your people and your design must evolve for your machine to improve. When you get personal evolution right, the returns are exponential. As people get better and better, they are more able to think independently, probe, and help you refine your machine. The faster they evolve, the faster your outcomes will improve.

Your part in an employee’s personal evolution begins with a frank assessment of their strengths and weaknesses, followed by a plan for how their weaknesses can be mitigated either through training or by switching to a different job that taps into their strengths and preferences. 

Even as you help people develop, you must constantly assess whether they are able to fulfill their responsibilities excellently. This is not easy to do objectively since you will often have meaningful relationships with your reports and may be reluctant to evaluate them accurately if their performance isn’t at the bar. By the same token, you may be tempted to give an employee who rubs you the wrong way a worse evaluation than he or she deserves. An idea meritocracy requires objectivity. #principleoftheday

Looking ahead to the next 24 months, my main focus is passing along whatever I have that could be of benefit to others. At 76, that is the driving force behind everything I am doing.

It is exactly why I wrote about the mechanics of debt - so people could study those mechanics. I still love playing my investment game, which I am now doing for my family office, and I am making a platform so that everybody can do that sort of thing. Those are my aspirations professionally. Personally, my focus is on family, my grandkids, and simply savoring life.

When determining an acceptable rate of improvement for something, it is its level in relation to the rate of change that matters. I often see people lose sight of this. They say "it's getting better" without noticing how far below the bar it is and whether the rate of change will get it above the bar in an acceptable amount of time. #principleoftheday

If you put your goals in the hands of RPs who can execute those goals well, and if you make it clear to them that they are personally responsible for achieving those goals and doing the tasks, they should produce excellent results.

The same goes for yourself. If your designer/manager-you doesn't have a good reason to be confident that your worker-you is up to a given task, it would be crazy to let yourself do the task without seeking the supervision of believable parties. You know that there are a lot of incompetent people in the world trying to do things they're not good at, so the chances are good that you are one of them. That's just a reality and it's okay for you to accept it and deal with it in a way that produces good outcomes. #principleoftheday

I believe we are currently on the brink. We are entering a particularly risky period expected between the 2026 midterm election and the 2028 presidential election. At the same time, the monetary situation is becoming increasingly threatening. The U.S. government currently spends $7 trillion while only taking in approximately $5 trillion, resulting in 40% overspending. While the government has a significant amount of debt to finance, the demand for that debt is falling. This decline in demand is driven by standard supply and demand factors, as well as fears from debt holders regarding potential sanctions.

Someone who doesn't have much can be more generous giving a little than a rich person giving a lot. Some people respond to the generosity while others respond to the money. You want the first type with you, and you always want to treat them generously.

When I had nothing, I was as generous as I could be with people who appreciated my generosity more than the higher levels of compensation others could afford to give them. For that reason, they stayed with me. I never forgot that, and I made a point of making them rich when I had the opportunity to do so. And they in turn were generous to me in their own way when I needed their generosity most. We both got something much more valuable than money--and we got the money too.

Remember that the only purpose of money is to get you what you want, so think hard about what you value and put it above money. How much would you sell a good relationship for? There's not enough money in the world to get you to part with a valued relationship. #principleoftheday

There are a number of major forces operating right now, but let's look at the AI force. AI is going to enhance productivity and bring costs down over time, but it's also going to bring jobs down a lot. It is a huge wealth gap producer.

The question still is: how do you distribute that wealth and its benefits, like education? Right now, 60% of Americans have below a sixth-grade reading level. How do you make that population productive?
