We've evaluated a lot of base models on perplexity-based evals and Kimi k2.5 proved to be the strongest!

After that, we do continued pre-training and high-compute RL (a 4x scale-up).

The combination of the strong base, CPT and RL, and Fireworks' inference and RL samplers make Composer-2 frontier level.

It was a miss to not mention the Kimi base in our blog from the start. We'll fix that for the next model.

Yep, Composer 2 started from an open-source base! We will do full pretraining in the future.

Only ~1/4 of the compute spent on the final model came from the base, the rest is from our training. This is why evals are very different.

And yes, we are following the license through our inference partner terms.

Composer 2 marks the one-year anniversary of our large model training efforts. Since then, we've built an exceptionally talent-dense team of ~40 people with some of the best researchers and engineers from the labs, academia, industry, and more heterogeneous backgrounds.

And we are exclusively focused on coding. We don't care about models that can respond to emails, do your tax returns, or be your friend. 

Every FLOP, token, parameter, and researcher is entirely dedicated to software engineering.

When does synchronous coding hit diminishing returns to intelligence?

I believe we're a few months away from a ChatGPT intelligence bar where >95% of these queries don't get much better with smarter models.

More intelligence would only matter for async-level tasks, ones that would take developers hours to perform.

Think about a large fraction of UI work. The bottleneck for layout changes is not intelligence or task horizon, it's user intent.

In that world, the speed matters a lot more! I'm very excited for frontier models at Composer-1 speed.
