Zuck just announced Meta is opening the weights for Muse Glimmer, with Muse Spark 1.2 coming soon

But a year ago, everyone doubted Meta's position in the AI race

In an interview I did with him, he admitted where they missed the mark:

"Llama 4 was not on the trajectory that I thought it needed to be on. It was in many ways a big improvement over Llama 3, but we weren't trying to be a bit better than Llama 3. We're a frontier lab. It wants to be doing leading work."

So he blew it up and rebuilt:

"I felt like I'd learned enough about how to set up a lab that I wanted to reformulate the work we were doing."

His conviction behind the rebuild:

"AI is gonna be the most important technology in our lives, in our lifetimes. Building the capacity to build absolutely leading models is gonna be really critical for unlocking creativity."

Malaria kills over 600,000 people every year, most of them children under 5, so this could save millions of lives

Here's how it works:

> Each drone weighs 40 grams (lighter than a golf ball)

> It fires ultrasonic pulses and listens through an array of tiny microphones, reading the Doppler signature of an insect's wings

> That signal lets it tell a mosquito apart from a bee, then chase the target down and intercept it mid-air with propellers

The company is backed by YC, and the founder previously engineered guidance and navigation systems for missiles. It's a legitimate project.

They believe 10 drones could clear an entire square kilometre, cutting the cost of mosquito control by 100x

So far though, the only public demo (below) was killing a moth in an enclosed room. Whether it works on a mosquito in the wild is the real test ahead

When I interviewed Sam Altman a few months back, this was how he explained the future of work:

"Not only would they not believe you that this thing was gonna happen, they very likely would look at what you do or I do and say, that's not real work."

"If you're farming... you're keeping people alive. And you people of the future -- life just got too easy for you... you're playing a game to fill your time and your need to feel important."

"To us, though, it feels real. Certainly, to me it feels real."

"If we could see those jobs of the future, we would be like: okay, maybe our jobs were not as real as a farmer's job, but it's a lot more real than this game you're playing to entertain yourself."

"I have some short-term worries as we go through this transition, but I'm so willing to bet on human drives being what they are. I think we'll find plenty of things to do."

Reminder to go touch grass

A scientist in Japan demonstrated that the air inside a forest strengthens your immune system for a full month

The study is incredibly fascinating:

Qing Li, an immunologist at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, took 12 men on a 3-day forest trip. These were slow walks with no breathing exercises and no set route.

Then he tested their blood and found a surge in natural killer cells -- the immune cells your body uses to fight cancer and virus-infected cells.

Remarkably, the effect didn't fade when they went home, it was still measurable 30 days later.

A control group that walked the same distance through a city showed no change at all.

Pine, cedar, and cypress trees release compounds called phytoncides to defend themselves from insects and bacteria. You breathe them in, and Li believes they switch your immune cells into high gear.

He estimates one forest walk a month may be enough to keep those cells elevated all year.

The best medicine might not even need a prescription -- just a walk among the trees.

Mark Zuckerberg is running Meta's superintelligence lab like a startup.

When I interviewed him, he told me the principles on how he built the team:

"You don't need many hundreds of people. You need 50 to 100 people. It's a group science project who can keep the whole thing in their head at once. Seats on the boat are precious."

"If someone is not pulling their weight on that, it has this huge negative effect in the way that it doesn't have on other parts of the company"

"I wanna know who the top AI researchers are, and I wanna personally have relationships with them, and build the strongest team we can."

His rules for running it:

- If someone isn't pulling their weight, it has an outsized negative effect, so he personally went out and recruited every top researcher himself
- No top-down deadlines. "It's research. You don't know how long the thing is gonna take."
- Keep the org flat. No non-technical management layers, because once someone stops doing the work, "the knowledge decays."

Many people were doubting Meta's position in the AI race.

Yesterday, they dropped Muse Spark 1.1, now one of the strongest agentic models, and massively undercut OpenAI and Anthropic on price.

When I interviewed Zuck last year, he told me his focus:

"Have by far the highest compute per researcher, and that we do whatever it takes to go build out all that capacity."

These are the first real signs that the bet -- spending tens of billions on compute -- is paying off. 

Meta's stock is now up over 10% since the release.

There's a startup trying to build data centers in the ocean.

And it's INCREDIBLY fascinating:

Mass consumption of electricity and water is a growing bottleneck for data centers.

So by moving offshore, it eliminates both problems -- the ocean provides unlimited cooling, and the waves provide unlimited power.

There are also no engines, so the data centers drive themselves to their destination by using the shape of their hull to propel through waves.

Called Panthalassa.
