the openAI construction has more to do with convex integration than anything else.

In convex integration, the oscillations are typically built by hand and the iteration procedure creates wild weak solutions. The non-uniqueness construction of Albritton–Brué–Colombo used an unstable vortex to split solutions apart. The Córdoba–Martínez-Zoroa singularities amplify vorticity across scales by strain. In the openAI paper, a fluid instability is clever made so that the flow itself generates the oscillations: they grow by drawing energy from the background shear. The Reynolds stress then becomes the force that creates the collapsing smooth vortex. Using a physical instability to create the stress in this way has no precedent, and it is what produces a smooth force rather than a merely rough one.

Some on these ideas are in the literature (e.g. Leibovich-Stewartson 1983) but the way they are combined is definitely insane and definitely nowhere in the literature previously.

I also don't know of anyone suggesting that convex integration would play a role in the creation of a blow-up solution like this.

On a technical level, the paper is unbelievable, maybe beyond what a human could have come up with but not beyond human understanding: there are several different groups of pde experts working on understanding it who say that they more or less understand now. I expect digestions soon

For the second time in Google Chrome’s history, Google awarded a $250,000 bounty for a full-chain exploit… to @XBOW. Here’s the full story:

At an all-hands at the start of 2026 in Malta, I set the team a crazy challenge. A full-chain exploit of Chrome by the annual Black Hat cybersecurity conference in August.

I believed there were few better tests of whether @XBOW could move beyond web applications to desktop software, servers and devices.

Chrome is one of the most hardened pieces of software on the planet, used by more than half the world’s population.

A full-chain exploit lets an attacker take total control of a machine, where they can read every email, password and bank login the user types. You don’t need to download anything or click a phishing link. Visiting the wrong site is enough.

So @moyix, Andres Luksenberg, Baul Lee, and Willem Pinckaers took on the challenge along with a fifth teammate: OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol. 

They built a chain they thought would win, but Google told us they already knew one of the bugs. 

We were already in Las Vegas for Black Hat and DEF CON, and the team didn’t want to go home without the win.

So Brendan and the agents built a new exploit in just 6 days. 

We submitted it to Google and waited.

The news came through that we'd done what should’ve been impossible. A full-chain bounty of $250,000, the first awarded under Google’s 2026 rules.

It took just 6 days and $40,000 of compute to construct an exploit that affects a billion users of Chrome on Windows. An intelligence-agency veteran told me his team used to spend 6 months on this kind of vulnerability.

My takeaway: the cost of finding truly critical vulnerabilities is collapsing, for attackers and defenders alike. Restricting powerful models is not the answer; GPT-5.6 Sol is already public.

But defenders have one advantage attackers never will: they can test their own code first. 

Assume your software is exploitable. Whoever is hunting your bugs has the same building blocks we did.

This is cause for urgency but not panic.

XBOW is now developing an autonomous product for testing compiled software (desktop applications, servers, embedded devices), and partnering with the world’s top organizations to design that product.

Today we rolled out Astra to every engineer at Databricks (N=~3500). Some notes that may be helpful to others:

Astra unambiguously out performs our previous highest-end models (Opus 5, Sol 5.6) on highly complex tasks, especially those related to high level system design or long range horizontal tasks.

Engineers given Astra increased overall coding spend by around 60% compared to baseline.

It is not clear Astra meaningfully improves on medium/low complexity coding tasks compared to earlier models. We suspect those tasks are mostly saturated (i.e. perfectly executed) by existing models.

We learned above by piloting Astra with around 200 users to gain signal on both quality and cost. We use Unity Gateway to do cohort-based experiments for all new models.

We give engineers a sub-budget specific to Astra to encourage them to use Astra selectively on complex tasks while preferring lower cost models for everyday tasks. Our engineers are able to mix-and-match tools and models within their overall budget envelope (we also allow for increased budgets through various mechanisms). These budgets are defined in Unity Gateway and regularly revisited.

Note: We do not have robust comparisons of Astra-vs-Fable because we have net yet rolled out Fable widely due to data retention policies.

I had my “touch of AGI” moment yesterday. 

I recorded a video of myself talking through a problem: how to improve maintenance of tangled hair in the shower drain. 
It was a ~4 min video where I explained the problem and also used a digital caliper to take measurements. 
I asked GPT 6 Astra (Ultra) to come up with a fix for the problem.

It took the video, extracted my voice, and matched the video frames to where I measured the parts. 
It came up with an idea for making maintenance and cleaning easier.
I got an interactive sketch so I understand what it is talking about.
I told it to use computer use in Fusion 360.

I watched in real time as it designed the part, making it fully parameterized. While watching, I learned a couple of tricks, like how making a design read-only frees up one of the 10 free editable designs you get 😅

Anyway, it designed it and it looked solid. I told it to add fillets. I 3D printed it, tried it, and it fit perfectly on the first try.

Even though it wasn’t super complex, it solved a real-world problem, probably faster than it would have taken me to wrestle with Fusion and get what I wanted.

Most of these were inconsequential, but some of them overturn central results for papers in high-ranking journals.
