Looking back on AI progress in 2025: people are increasingly weighing how AI should fit into our lives and how vital it is for the United States to lead in its development. Being pro-AI does not mean being anti-regulation. It means being thoughtful — crafting policies that secure AI’s transformative benefits while mitigating risks and preserving flexibility as the technology continues to evolve rapidly.

This year, my wife Anna and I started getting involved politically, including through political contributions, reflecting support for policies that advance American innovation and constructive dialogue between government and the technology sector. These views are grounded in a belief that the United States must work closely with builders, researchers, and entrepreneurs to ensure AI is developed responsibly at home and that we remain globally competitive.

AI has the potential to democratize entrepreneurship and the American dream, make healthcare more affordable and effective, provide access to high-quality education, accelerate scientific discovery, expand economic opportunity, and strengthen national competitiveness and security. We feel this potential personally; through Anna’s experience navigating the healthcare system with complex chronic conditions that don’t fit neatly into any specialty, we’ve seen firsthand how AI can empower people and lead to better health outcomes. AI represents an opportunity to truly improve healthcare, one we shouldn’t squander.

We’ve been encouraged by the growing seriousness with which policymakers in Washington are approaching US leadership in AI, which we’ve long believed depends on optimism, curiosity to explore, and serious infrastructure development. As I expressed at a recent White House technology leaders’ dinner, it’s been great to see the president’s and his administration’s willingness to engage directly with the AI community and approach emerging technology with a growth-focused mindset and goal of helping to ensure continued US leadership in AI and supporting American economic competitiveness.

I updated my new Codex Meeting Recorder skill to use GPT Realtime Whisper. Tell Codex to use the skill, and it will start transcription and show it in the preview pane. You can ask questions about the transcript as it's being generated. When the meeting's done, tell Codex to end it, and you'll get the full transcript and a formatted version (the formatted version needs work; on my list).

Note that because this uses the GPT Realtime Whisper endpoint, it's more expensive than transcribing at the end of the meeting, at $0.017 per minute (so about $0.51 per 30-minute meeting). I'm considering adding a local realtime option in future, such as with Nemotron Speech Streaming.

by pressing both CMD keyboard buttons, context of whatever app you're on gets sent to Codex, including screenshots and text.

you might be thinking "isn't this the same as screenshotting and pasting it", and no it isn't.

Appshots also pass in context from the app that isn't visible on the screen. For example if you're viewing a Google Doc and take an appshot, it passes in text that's scrolled offscreen as well.

along with this release, OpenAI made remote Codex still work even while your laptop screen is locked, so you can leave your laptop on 24/7 at home, safely, while you code from your phone.

highly recommend trying out the Codex app - so many features that don't exist elsewhere yet and the app is just delightful to use

A breakthrough by OpenAI in a very famous Combinatorics problem, the Planar Unit Distance problem by Erdos 1946.

The problem is amazing because it can be described to a first-grader: Find a way to place n points on the plane to maximize the number of pairs that have distance exactly 1. 

For example, if you have n=4 points on a square (of side-length 1) you have 4 pairs of distance 1. The diagonals have length sqrt(2) so don't count. 
But you can squeeze one diagonal and create a point-set with n=4 points and 5 pairs of distance 1. And you can't get more than 5 pairs from n=4 points, so we are done with n=4 points. 

Now, if you place n points on a line, you have n-1 pairs of distance 1. In general, all known constructions of n points had a number of pairs scaling essentially linearly: n^{1+something vanishing}

It seems that the model found a way to
place n points on the plane so that their unit distances scale super-linearly: like n^{1+delta} for some *constant* delta. Delta was not explicitly specified apparently, but a forthcoming refinement by Will Sawin shows delta=0.014 works, according to the announcement.

This is incredible progress for mathematics, since this is (unlike previous Erdos problems solved by AI) a major breakthrough, in one of the most studied problems in combinatorial geometry. If you're in mathematics research now, you feel the AGI.
