The coolest meeting I had this week with was Paul, who used ChatGPT and other LLMs to create an mRNA vaccine protocol to save his dog Rosie. It is amazing story.

"The chat bots empowered me as an individual to act with the power of a research institute - planning, education, troubleshooting, compliance, and yes, real scientific design work in converting genomic data to a vaccine prescription and designing the treatment protocol around it. But they worked alongside humans at every step. The combination is what made it possible."

It immediately got me thinking "this should be a company".

Also, Paul is an extraordinary guy. This should be easy to do, but it is not yet.

AI will also present new threats to society that we have to address. No company can sufficiently mitigate these on their own; we will need a society-wide response to things like novel bio threats, a massive and fast change to the economy, extremely capable models causing complex emergent effects across society, and more.

These are the areas the OpenAI Foundation will initially focus on, and in my opinion are some of the most important ones for us to get right. The Foundation will spend at least $1 billion over the next year.

@woj_zaremba, co-founder of OpenAI, will transition to Head of AI Resilience. I believe that shifting how the world thinks about safety to include a Resilience-style approach is critical, and I am extremely grateful to Wojciech for taking on this role.

Wojciech has been my cofounder for the last decade; anyone who knows him will understand what I mean when I say he is one of a kind. He has a lot of ideas about how we build a new kind of AI safety.

As Helion and OpenAI start to explore working together at significant scale, it is difficult for me to be on both boards. (I will have a financial interest in Helion so still be recused from negotiations, but from a governance perspective this will make things easier for both companies.)

I've been testing GPT-5.4 for the last week.

In short, it is the best model in the world, by far.

It's so good that it's the first model that makes the “which model should I use?” conversation feel almost over.

The biggest surprise: I barely use Pro anymore!

If you know me, you know I'm a Pro addict. I reach for Pro models constantly, and use them for almost everything, as they just... nail almost anything I give to them.

For the first time, 5.4's standard version, with heavy thinking, just broke that habit.

Even in standard mode, GPT-5.4 is better than previous models in Pro mode... crazy!

Coding capabilities are ridiculous... it's essentially flawless. Inside Codex, it's insanely reliable. Coding is essentially solved. There's not much more to say on this, it's just THAT good.

The Pro version is near-perfect. Other testers I spoke with saw it solving problems that were unsolvable by any other model. At this point, Pro is overkill for almost every normal use-case, but when you really need the power to do something extremely difficult, it's incredible.

Consistent with everything I've said above, even the standard thinking version uses fewer reasoning tokens than previous models to get the same level of results. In practice, this means you get great results much faster than before. This was one of my biggest gripes with previous OpenAI models. They just took too long to complete simple tasks. Assuming the speed we had during testing holds up as more users join, this is going to be a big win for OpenAI.

It still has weaknesses, though:

- Frontend taste is FAR behind Opus 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro. , why is this so hard to fix? @OpenAI once you fix this, there's literally no reason for me to use any other model. Please please please do it!

- It can still miss obvious real-world context. For example, I had it plan an itinerary for a trip. At first glance, it looked perfect, but it failed to take into account that it chose locations that would be mobbed by spring breakers, so I had to re-run the prompt from scratch with more context.

- When testing it inside OpenClaw, it kept stopping short before finishing tasks. I'm assuming this will be fixed quickly, but it's still worth noting. 

But zooming out:

This thing is so far ahead overall that the nitpicks are starting to feel beside the point.

GPT-5.4 is a serious fucking model.

The best model in the world.

By far.

There is a lot we will talk about in the coming days, but since this is one of the first "real deal" decisions we have faced, I wanted to share a few things that have been heavily on my mind the past few days.

These are the principles I care most about for this decision: alignment, democratization, empowerment, and individual agency.

The democratic process must stay in control, and we must democratize AI. OpenAI should not decide the fate of the world; no private company should. We need to work with governments, but also we need to make sure individuals get increasing power.

Things are moving so fast that we need to urgently educate the world so that the democratic process has time to catch up. I think one of our most important strategic decisions ever was the principle of iterative deployment.

In particular, the key element required for democracy, such as protection of privacy, must be defended by all of society.

I believe that, as some of the creators of this new technology, we deserve to and are obligated to have a loud voice about the risks, pitfalls, and benefits we see. 

I think we are heading towards a world where the relationship between governments and AI efforts is critical. This will be difficult but it has to happen; I do not see any good future where we don't get there. There should not be games and fights in the press like this; drastic government action should be avoided.

I think there are real dangers coming to the world, and maybe pretty soon; I tried to put myself in the mindset of how I'd feel the day after an attack on the US or a new bioweapon we could have helped prevent.

We have been working with the DoW to make some additions in our agreement to make our principles very clear.

1.   We are going to amend our deal to add this language, in addition to everything else:

"• Consistent with applicable laws, including the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution, National Security Act of 1947, FISA Act of 1978, the AI system shall not be intentionally used for domestic surveillance of U.S. persons and nationals.

• For the avoidance of doubt, the Department understands this limitation to prohibit deliberate tracking, surveillance, or monitoring of U.S. persons or nationals, including through the procurement or use of commercially acquired personal or identifiable information."

It’s critical to protect the civil liberties of Americans, and there was so much focus on this, that we wanted to make this point especially clear, including around commercially acquired information. Just like everything we do with iterative deployment, we will continue to learn and refine as we go.

I think this is an important change; our team and the DoW team did a great job working on it.

2. The Department also affirmed that our services will not be used by Department of War intelligence agencies (for example, the NSA). Any services to those agencies would require a follow-on modification to our contract.

3. For extreme clarity: we want to work through democratic processes. It should be the government making the key decisions about society. We want to have a voice, and a seat at the table where we can share our expertise, and to fight for principles of liberty. But we are clear on how the system works (because a lot of people have asked, if I received what I believed was an unconstitutional order, of course I would rather go to jail than follow it). But

4. There are many things the technology just isn’t ready for, and many areas we don’t yet understand the tradeoffs required for safety. We will work through these, slowly, with the DoW, with technical safeguards and other methods.

5. One thing I think I did wrong: we shouldn't have rushed to get this out on Friday. The issues are super complex, and demand clear communication. We were genuinely trying to de-escalate things and avoid a much worse outcome, but I think it just looked opportunistic and sloppy. Good learning experience for me as we face higher-stakes decisions in the future.

In my conversations over the weekend, I reiterated that Anthropic should not be designated as a SCR, and that we hope the DoW offers them the same terms we’ve agreed to.

We will host an All Hands tomorrow morning to answer more questions.

Three general things from this AMA:

1. There is more open debate than I thought ther ewould be, at least in this part of Twitter, about whether we should prefer a democratically elected government or unelected private companies to have more power. I guess this is something people disagree on, but…I don’t. This seems like an important area for more discussion.

2. I think the is a question behind a lot of the questions but I haven’t seen quite articulated: What happens if the government tries to nationalize OpenAI or other AI efforts? I obviously don’t know; I have thought about it of course (it has seemed to me for a long time it might be be better if building AGI were a government project) but it doesn’t seem super likely on the current trajectory. That said, I do think a close partnership between governments and the companies building this technology is super important.

3. People take their safety (in the national security sense) more for granted than I realized, which I think is a good thing on balance but I don’t think shows enough respect to the tremendous work it takes for that to happen.

Also, I am on the whole very grateful for the level of reasonable and good-faith engagement here. It was not what I expected.

Tonight, we reached an agreement with the Department of War to deploy our models in their classified network.

In all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome.

AI safety and wide distribution of benefits are the core of our mission. Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems.  The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement.

We also will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the DoW also wanted. We will deploy FDEs to help with our models and to ensure their safety, we will deploy on cloud networks only.

Tonight, we reached an agreement with the Department of War to deploy our models in their classified network.

In all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome.

AI safety and wide distribution of benefits are the core of our mission. Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems.  The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement.

We also will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the DoW also wanted. We will deploy FDEs to help with our models and to ensure their safety, we will deploy on cloud networks only.

I’m really excited to share that I’m joining Benchmark.

The past two years as a full time investor have been the most rewarding of my career. I really love venture capital, which is not something I ever imagined I’d say when I was kid, but here we are.

I love new ideas and being part of a team with a mission. I love getting to be there for people who are struggling towards goals they really care about. I love learning from people who are better CEOs than I ever was. I love the texture of the work, the competition, and the way the job lets you invest in relationships.

I love it so much that I’ve even turned into a little venture nerd with a podcast who goes around harassing great investors and founders, trying to learn as much as I can as fast as possible. I’ve certainly learned what I care most about, and what kind of investor I want to be.

What I’ve realized is that I love investing at the Series A, when there’s enough going on that an investor can be useful but not so much that you can’t have an impact. I think there are many amazing ways to practice venture, it’s just the way that most speaks to me. And as I came to realize that, I started to think about how to best set myself up to do that craft as well as possible. It became clear to me there is nowhere better for this than Benchmark; the way they’re structured, their principles, their overall approach to investing, and their track record all create an environment that I believe will let me do my best work as an investor and help founders the most I possibly can.

As I’ve gotten to know the team at Benchmark I’ve come to admire so much about each of them. Peter is truly playing his own game. A lot of what he says sounds like poetry at first, but as the ideas roll around in your head for a while you realize how much depth they have. I first heard about Eric many years ago from my friend Saji at Benchling while I was building Lattice, who described him as the most amazing board member and attributed him with a lot of the company’s success. That’s the kind of partner I want to be one day. Chetan is brilliant and truly thinks for himself; I’ve realized over time what a courageous guy he is. And then there’s my friend Ev, whose skills complement mine and who I just love to be around. I can’t wait to have him as a partner in crime.

When given the chance to work with this group I just knew I had to go.

One of my motivating north stars with Alt Capital was to build a firm and be a partner that I most would have wanted as an entrepreneur. Although I haven’t gotten everywhere I want to be yet, I’m proud of the work so far. And now I’m excited to build on that work at Benchmark, where I hope to increase my rate of learning and get armed with the power of a partnership so I can help founders reach their dreams even more.

Thank you to the companies who’ve let me invest with them at Alt Cap. I’m keeping all my board seats and supporting everyone just the same as before.

Thank you to the LPs who’ve backed me as well. I am so excited about the portfolio we have and am grateful I can stick with all those companies.

And finally thank you to my teammates, Bala, Vivek, and Nate. Bala took a bet on me and started investing with me before it was remotely obvious, and we’ve been able to grow so much figuring it out together as investors. I credit Nate with helping Alt start feeling like a firm. He joined us from First Round over a year ago and made everything run smoothly. And while Vivek joined just a little while ago, even in the short time we’ve worked together he’s had a meaningful impact on how we think and invest. They’re all joining Benchmark with me.
