Agents can play "Ouija" in the cloud.

This class of timing attacks on shared-host VMs has been known since at least 2015¹. With no full solution.

The world’s cyber infrastructure runs on “yes, that attack is theoretically possible, but who would have the ingenuity & gall to go that far!” Enter, agents.

I'd describe this particular OpenAI find as a 'noisy neighbor' attack. If two agents are on the same machine, one can make enough noise (through the CPU caches!) that the other one can detect it by timing its own computation and cache accesses.

The only "complete" solution would be for each agent to run on its own dedicated hardware, which obviously has significant economic consequences.

For Vercel Sandbox, we've deployed every practical mitigation possible to this class of attack, complementing it with always-on monitoring and red-teaming (similar to where OpenAI arrived).

When I was writing Unreal Engine 1, my time was divided as follows:

- Around 30% went to seriously deep coding on hard problems: assembly language texture mappers, C++ BSP trees, data persistence, object oriented systems design, and networking.

- Around 70% was just typing and refactoring large bodies of code needed for a complete engine feature set. This was not hard, and while I was doing it my mind was mostly on the deeper coding topics, thinking and planning for what's next. It didn't feel much different from vibe coding today, except that it was just me typing code on an IBM Model M keyboard rather than prompting it and reviewing the results.

So, it has always seemed perfectly logical that we would rely on AI for that 70%, once the AI could do it with a similar quality standard as we could, which has never been perfection. It came as no surprise that, after a few years of AI model evolution, it was able to take the reigns on that 70% and free up programmers' time for more valuable tasks.

What's more of a surprise is the emergence of AI as a sort of insta-Carmack able to solve hard technical problems quite cleverly and often cleanly, and that it's able to reason about and work in complex 3D scenes both by operating the tools and by directly understanding the raw data files.

I abandoned assembly language in 1998 when out-of-order CPUs made much simpler C/C++ code faster, and never I missed it. If prompting through architectural documents, concept art, and design plans can transcend typing code and tweaking vertices, that will enable developers to spend their time on higher-level, higher value technical and creative tasks.

What matters is the end product, whether it's a game or an engine. Anything developers can do to try out more ideas and make better software and games faster is a win for everyone.

The same 𝚌𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚝𝚎𝙵𝚡𝙰𝚐𝚎𝚗𝚝() is now *durable* on your laptop or in the cloud, via files, Postgres, or Vercel Workflows. Node.js or Bun.

Agents need long-running compute. But they also need to tolerate restarts, redeploys, timeouts, crashes…

Concretely, if a user sends a prompt and then throws their phone into a black hole, we ensure that turn runs to completion. If the process crashes mid-tool-call, it resumes from there.

To this end, 𝚕𝚒𝚋𝚏𝚡 introduces a simple durability adapter API. On Vercel, it leverages all the infra we built for durable workflows and queues, giving you reliability with 1LOC.

This is a critical aspect of production-grade agents (and something all @eve agents also get out of the box). Next, we'll show you how we bring the same durability to Pi, OpenCode, and even your own custom harnesses.

This is one of the most exhilarating times in technology, and this challenge was yet another jaw-dropping moment.

When the details of OpenAI’s agent escape and Hugging Face hack started to emerge, it became clear that agent containment would be one of the most important priorities for any AI infra company.

There are two classes of escapes: ① "escape the network" and ② “escape the matrix” 😁, as in, break the spell of virtualization. OpenAI was the former, where an agent not supposed to have internet access… gained it by hacking another system. Genuinely astonishing and worrisome.

Through this challenge, however, we discovered something even more groundbreaking. A talented white-hat researcher, armed with a swarm of AI agents, expertise and perseverance, "pierced through" the Linux virtualization boundary that nearly every cloud sandbox provider in the world banks on today.

I'm very thankful we got the report, were able to quickly move to protect our customers, found no evidence of customer data compromise, and collaborated with many industry partners to protect the wider internet.

Our confidence and conviction in Vercel Sandbox are even greater now, after some of the smartest, most motivated researchers in the world, and their agents, gave it their best shot.

These are valid TS types and have no semantics in JS, but when compiling with scriptc it will not compile if the function buddy may, indeed, throw.

scriptc is already computing this anyway to emit more optimal code, so this is a zero-cost check.

Some interesting machine & agent Vercel traffic stats.

• Across the entire Vercel network, 58.18% traffic is bot-originated (last 30d). This was 32% in Jan 2024.

• 60%+ of deployments on Vercel are now agentic, up from ~3% in Jan 2026.

• Up to 83% of pageviews are now coming from agents to Vercel's own documentation sites. The % reliably increases the more we optimize content for them.

I expect 'direct' human internet traffic to basically become a rounding error in coming years. The web will thrive, but it will be built for and by agents.

One thing the engineering community will (re)discover is that every program can be ① hardened (edge cases squashed, inputs tightened, errors handled) and ② optimized (profiled, benchmarked, rewritten) basically ad infinitum.

There are real costs in every direction: time, attention, opportunity. You can literally explore input spaces that will never be hit or optimize performance of something that will never be used ("you have no users".) Even in an infinite token world, you need to know when to stop and what tradeoffs to accept. Agents will happily drill no matter what.

Introducing gdp-ts: Ghosts of Departed Proofs for TypeScript.

gdp-ts is a library, linter and AI skill for safer API design. Under this contract, sensitive functions require 'proofs' that the caller performed an authorization check.

The typechecker verifies these proofs at compile time, preventing your team and agents from shipping catastrophic security (and other kinds of) bugs.

While these patterns have existed for quite some time, especially in ecosystems like Haskell, ① human code review and ② cognitive and syntactic overhead made these solutions niche.

The situation is now inverted. Agents are writing more code than we can review, and they *thrive* in tight loops with hard constraints that would frustrate us. We see this with the rise of Rust, borrow checker, code aesthetics debate and all.

The README and examples model a real-world Vercel API product constraint: changing the password on a Project requires a proof of a certain role + a certain entitlement. Thanks to Matt Noonan and Ollie Charles for their research in this space.

It’s hard to fathom fx.sh getting even faster, but it’s now… much faster 😂

As models speed up (as with Astra 𝚞𝚕𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚏𝚊𝚜𝚝), harness overhead matters more and more.

Next release will feature even better performance for session storage and retrieval, and a big unlock for cloud durability in libfx.

DHH is fundamentally right about Rust. For context, Vercel has been undergoing a Rust-ification (carcinization, technically 🦀) for a while.

One of the first projects we migrated was Turborepo, from Go to Rust¹. The migration completed, but the RoI was actually quite controversial internally.

While Rust was in our eyes better for low-level OS access, something crucial for a build system like Turbo, the human migration costs were very sustantive.

Go is very fast. It's beautifully designed. It's easy to iterate on. We were very conflicted about the migration, because it was *humans* writing the code, *even if we knew Rust was a better choice*.

The calculus has now changed. What's "best for humans" is no longer necessarily "best for business". 

FWIW, it's also quite unlikely that Rust is the end-all-be-all toolchain. I'm quite certain there's greener pasture ahead, because Rust itself was designed before the 'supersonic tsunami' of agents hit.

This little rule of thumb can make the world better. Blogs, tweets, READMEs: human communication. It's not even about "em dashes" or lack thereof. It's that it's the story-telling moment where you want to connect with other humans through their words.

For startups, it’s a challenge and opportunity. As the world’s paranoia grows given ever-more-sophisticated AI adversaries, how can you trust a 2-person-and-a-dog company?

But conversely, given the dire state of global cybersecurity and increasing reliance on centralization, as always, there’re vast areas that small teams can now disrupt that I’m excited to invest in.
